Alexandra: Beyond the Name – A Tale of Strength and Legacy
Oh man, the Alexandra fly—what a killer little pattern! It’s got this slick silver body that really flashes in the water, just like a minnow darting away from trouble. I swear, sometimes when the light hits it just right, even I wanna take a bite!
So, tying this thing—super simple. Grab a wet fly or streamer hook, size 8 or 10 usually does the trick. I like using flat silver tinsel for the body—wraps up nice and tight, gives it that slim, baitfish profile. Then toss on a few red hackle fibers for the tail. Not too many, just enough to add a little pop of color. Trust me, that red makes a difference—trout go nuts for it. Finish it off with a neat little head, and boom, you’re in business.
Now, here’s the thing: it’s not tied to match any specific baitfish, which is kinda the beauty of it. But if you’re smart, you’ll peek at what’s swimming in your local waters and tweak the colors. More olive in the tail? Maybe some flashy blue? Match the hatch, even loosely, and you’ll get way more takes.
I’ve slayed with this fly everywhere—streams, lakes, you name it. Brown trout absolutely crush it, but don’t be shocked if a smallmouth bass smacks it halfway back to your rod tip. Funny story—once had a rainbow trout chase this thing right to my feet, like it was pissed off I’d even thrown it!
Anyway, give it a shot. Deadly simple, deadly effective. Tight lines!
(P.S. If you’re more of a visual learner, there’s a great tying video out there—just search “Alexandra fly” and you’ll find it.)
