Wings of Spontaneity
You know, fly fishing isn’t just something I do—it’s kinda woven into who I am. But then again, so’s being a dad, a husband, and someone who’s always chasing after what’s true and beautiful. Funny how standing in a river chasing trout teaches you as much about life as anything else. Those fish? They’ve got a way of dragging you to the most ridiculous, breathtaking places on earth. And after a while, I realized I didn’t just want to keep that to myself.
That’s how Journey on the Fly came about. It wasn’t some grand plan, just this itch to share what I’d learned—and yeah, maybe my kid tagging along half the time had something to do with it. (Turns out, dads don’t get to do anything solo.) But seriously, we’ve got a team that’ll match your crew’s vibe, whether you’re a total newbie or someone who’s been at it for years.
Here’s the thing: on the water, we’re all just guests. The trout? They live there. My job’s more about helping you connect with that world than anything else. And honestly, if I can nudge someone toward their own "aha" moment out there, that’s what sticks with me.
As for credentials—well, I don’t love rattling these off, but since it matters: Master Watershed Steward, Fly Fishing Team USA, and I mentor with The Mayfly Project here in WV. (Teaching kids to fish might be the most rewarding chaos I’ve signed up for.) Oh, and that religion degree from Liberty University? Yeah, it’s in the mix too—life’s funny like that.
Twenty years on the water adds up. I’ve even put together this Micro-Master Class thing to pass along what I’ve picked up. Got a couple irons in the fire too—casting workshops, guide training, and this Cross the Divide PA project I’m pretty stoked about.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about the fish. It’s the stupid early mornings, the way the light hits the water, the stories that come out of nowhere. Pennsylvania’s got these streams that’ll ruin you for anywhere else. Hit me up if you wanna see what I mean.
