Barregant's Enchanted Elle: A Fresh Perspective
Man, let me tell you about this sneaky little gem of a stream near the old chapel in Barregant. You hike down from that crumbling stone chapel - you know the one with the mossy roof? - and bam, there she is. Not gonna lie, it looks picture-perfect at first glance, all dappled sunlight and gurgling water, but don't let that fool you. This creek fights back.
Those trout? They've got PhDs in evasion. Between the car-sized boulders sticking up like rotten teeth and the willow branches that seem to actively reach out to snag your backcast... well, let's just say I've donated more flies to those trees than I care to admit. The water's got that crisp, mineral smell though - like wet granite and old pennies - that tells you there's gotta be fish hiding somewhere.
Mostly small browns, sure, but what they lack in size they make up for in attitude. Saw one maybe six inches long straight up aerial on me last spring. Little bastard came completely out of the water shaking his head like he was cursing me out in trout language.
Oh! And follow that dirt path along the west bank - gets muddy as hell after rain, watch your step - because there's this one pool about 200 yards downstream where the current sort of... now how do I describe it... kinda swirls behind this submerged log? Anyway, that's where I've had the best luck with size 16 parachute Adams when the mayflies are hatching.
Here's the thing though - you'll think you're alone out there, then suddenly some local farmer's gonna materialize out of nowhere to tell you about the "real big one" his grandpa caught back in '72. Happens every damn time.
