Used to connect the fly line and leader or to create a permanent loop at the end of the fly line. It gets its name because traditionally, a nail was used as a guide when threading the line.

Step 1

Place the tube and leader

Make sure the fly line is beyond the tube a bit. Put the leader parallel to it and wrap it around both the fly line and tube.

Step 2

Wrap and put leader through tube

Wrap the leader around it six more times and then put the tag end through the tube.

Step 3

Hold the wraps and tube

Pull the leader all the way through the tube until it comes out and end, all the while holding the wraps carefully.

Step 4

Remove the tube

Carefully remove the tube by sliding it out, continuing to hold the wraps with between two fingers.

Step 5

Trim any excess line

Trim any excess fly line and leader.
